Dunguaire Castle

The Wild Atlantic Way passes right by the gate of Dunguaire Castle as it sits proudly on the shores of Galway Bay at Kinvara. Probably one of the most photographed castles in the country, Dunguaire is incredibly photogenic and it has a fascinating history.

Brief History of Dunguaire Castle

Built in the early 16th century by the O’Hyne clan, Dunguaire was named after the ancient king of Connaught Guaire Aidne mac Colmáin(d.663) who would have been an ancestor of the Hyne family and who hailed from the nearby Gort area. During the following century, Dunguaire castle was taken over by the Martyn family from Galway.

The Martyn family was one of the so-called Tribes of Galway, prominent trader families from the city. Richard Oge Martyn, Mayor of Galway, moved into the castle and it remained in the family’s possession until 1924 when Oliver St John Gogarty purchased and refurbished it. It was during his ownership, that the castle played host to may literary figures such as W.B.Yeats and George Bernard Shaw.

Dunguaire Castle today

Today the castle, like the famous Bunratty Castle in County Clare is owned, maintained and operated by Shannon Heritage, part of the Shannon Group. A popular tourist attraction, the castle hosts banquets and tours and is a must see as you travel the Wild Atlantic Way.
