Killary Harbour is one of Ireland’s three glacial fjords and marks the border between counties Mayo and Galway on the Wild Atlantic Way. The fjord is approximately 16 Km long from the Atlantic to Aasleigh Falls near Leenane and is bordered by some of the most spectactular scenery in the country. Mweelrea, at 814m the highest mountain in Connacht, marks the northern bank of the fjord with the Maumturk and 12 Bens mountain ranges to the south.
Settlements on Killary Harbour
Today there are only 2 settlements on the banks of Killary Harbour. The picturesque village of Leenane (setting for the movie “the Field”) nestles between the Maumturk mountains and the fjord, and is the last village in Connemara if you are heading for County Mayo. It boasts a hotel, a couple of cafés and bars and the Sheep and Wool Centre (a gift shop with a café inside).
Rosroe is a tiny fishing hamlet around the pier of the same name at the mouth of the fjord. A few small cottages line the narrow road to the pier. This hamlet forms the starting point (or finishing point, depending on which direction you choose) for the hike along the banks of the fjord which follows an old famine road and passes Killary Sheep Farm on your way to meet the main road near the Killary Adventure Centre.
Activities on Killary Harbour
The surrounding hills and mountains are of course a major attraction for hill walkers, but the hike along the banks of the fjord is mainly level terrain. While not easy, given its 10Km length, it attracts the less experienced hiker because it provides some of the most stunning views in the area. Hiking boots and wet weather gear are a must, as well as snacks and water.
Killary Sheep Farm is located on the banks of the fjord and offers walking tours of their working sheep farm, turf cutting demonstrations, sheep dog demonstrations and, from July to September, sheep shearing demonstrations.
Killary Adventure Centre provides lots of water and land based adventure activities and is located on the banks of Killary Harbour.
As you travel along the banks of Killary harbour, you can’t help but notice the lines that mark the nets of Killary Fjord Shellfish, a family run mussel farm which has been operating in the fjord since 1989. The uniquie combination of fresh and sea water gives the Killary mussel it’s distinctive sweet flavour. From May-August it is possible to enjoy a tour of the farm followed by tastings.
Enjoy a 90 minute cruise on board the Connemara Lady with Killary Fjord Boat Tours. The Connemara Lady is a catamaran which ensures a smooth trip to the mouth of the fjord and back, with commentary from the crew and food available in the on board café.
