One of Leitrim’s unkown gems is Fowleys Falls. Strolling or cycling through the lake-land and drumlins of North Leitrim and South Fermanagh gives rise to a sating of the thirst for tranquility that nature inspires. Taking time to appreciate this undulating landscape is one of the few ways to experience what only the Gods of Olympus and now you, understand to be the essence of perfect contentment, or so it should have been until the journey becomes even better by inadvertently coming across Fowleys Falls. This can easily happen when meandering the back roads around the Melvin Lake area. What a joy when something of this nature happens.
Fowley Falls is not only a waterfall, it is a combination of falls, a series of rapids and a cascading of hurried water over what looks like steps specially carved out of stone to fit the picture.
Take a break at Fowleys Falls
Fowleys Falls stretch for 3km along a preserved hedgerow with gaps to get down to the narrow trail that follows the river and after descending, nature takes over, providing an abundance of trees, ferns, flowers, wildlife and birds to further adorn this glorious treasure trove. To cap it all, a quiet clearing, with picnic tables and a view back up over the full extent of excited cataracts means its possible to relax, picnic or curse the fact that food was part of the agenda when setting out.
A small car park is provided but maybe it would be better to park in Rossinver, a town only 2 km away and then stroll leisurely there and back to Fowley Falls remembering the picnic basket.
